Human Rights Education Officer


Organization: Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS).

Location: Cairo, Egypt.

Position: Human Rights Education Officer.

Starting Date: Immediately.

Salary: the remuneration will be commensurate with the experience of the applicant, and competitive to Egyptian NGOs rates.

Background about CIHRS:

The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) is an independent regional non-governmental organization founded in 1994. It aims at promoting respect for the principles of human rights and democracy, analyzing the difficulties facing the application of International Human Rights Law and disseminating Human Rights Culture in the Arab Region as well as engaging in dialogue between cultures. A key part of CIHRS' mandate is to help shape the understanding of the most pressing human rights issues within the region and then to coordinate and mobilize the key players and NGOs from across the Arab world to work together towards solutions. CIHRS enjoys consultative status in the United Nations ECOSOC, and observer status in the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights. CIHRS is also a member of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN), the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX) and is an Observer Member of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH). CIHRS was awarded the French Republic Award for Human Rights in December 2007.

Job description:

The Program Officer is responsible for providing leadership and daily management of the work of Human Rights Education unit, under the direct supervision of the Deputy Director and in coordination with other HRE program officers in the field. Ability to coordinate with other CIHRS programs and senior officers is required.

Tasks:

·        Contributing to the refining of CIHRS priorities and development of its general plans.

·        Designing the program’s work-plans within the institutional plans of the CIHRS.

·        Designating training activities and determining the required resources for implementation (material, trainers, equipment etc...).

·        Leading the implementation of program activities; monitoring, evaluating and drafting regular narrative reports about these activities.
·        Facilitating training sessions including working groups.

·        Contributing to publications and materials on human rights education (writing, evaluation etc...).

·        Contributing to the media activities reflecting and revolving around the program activities.

·        Developing CIHRS relationships with partners and institutions working in the field of human rights education regionally and internationally.

·        Contributing to human rights education material resources.

·        Acting as a trainer when needed.

 ·        Demonstrating a clear ability to represent CIHRS national, regional and international conferences.

Required qualifications:

·        A university degree in relevant social science field (e.g. political science, anthropology, sociology, law).
·        At least three years of relevant experience.
·        Knowledge of and experience in several of the following fields:

1.      Human rights standards and international humanitarian law.

2.      Planning for and designing of human rights education activities.

3.      Inter-personal skills including leadership and participatory skills; the ability to work independently and in a team successfully.

4.      Oral and written fluency in both Arabic and English.

5.      Advanced communication skills (oral and written) and proven ability to draft clearly and succinctly.

6.      Administrative and organizational skills.

7.      Computer knowledge (MS Word, Internet, Power Point).

8.      Ability to establish and maintain contacts with NGOs, universities, representatives of inter-governmental institutions and to work effectively in a multicultural environment.

9.      Analytical skills, resourceful and organised work practices with capacity to deal effectively with changing priorities, ability to keep deadlines and deal with several projects simultaneously.
